Chapter Twelve
Fatal Frankie
Rosa, an eleven-year-old girl with a beautiful dark complexion that went with the biggest saucer-shaped black eyes that one can imagine, was frightened to disobey her father. He had ordered her to stay in her room with her little sister, Carmen, until he returned to the house. Her father informed her that he would be back in about fifteen minutes. Thirty minutes passed. Three-year-old Carmen had been pleading with Rosa for the last ten minutes to take her to the bathroom. Rosa yielded to her sister’s pleas. She figured that she would be able to accompany Carmen to the bathroom and return to their room before her father could come home. She knew that her father expected strict obedience from her, but she also believed he would not be upset if she simply took Carmen to the bathroom. She grabbed Carmen’s hand. Upon exiting the bedroom, it was necessary to pass through the kitchen in order to get to the bathroom. As the two girls entered the kitchen, they came upon their mother slumped in the corner and bleeding from her head. There were two metallic screws protruding from the end of a table leg that was lying close to their mother’s motionless body. Rosa called out to her mother, “Mommy, Mommy!” There was no response. Rosa, sobbing, immediately dialed 911 from a kitchen phone. She screamed, “My father hit my mother with a piece of wood! She is bleeding from her head! Please come quickly!”
Frankie was thirty years old and had never been married when he first set his gaze on Migdalia in Prospect Park on a warm summer day almost thirteen years ago. He was Rollerblading, wearing a tight tank top shirt that accentuated his pumped-up biceps and a massive chest developed from years of weight training. Frankie’s thigh and calf muscles also bulged. He had good looks to match. He had a full head of wavy hair, flawless features, including high cheekbones and a strong chin, with near-perfect bright white teeth that lit up his face when he smiled.
Frankie stopped skating around the park when he spied Migdalia tossing a Frisbee with her five-year-old son. She was a vision of feminine pulchritude. She wore short-shorts that displayed long, firmly toned legs. Her T-shirt revealed a tight, bare midriff that bore no hint of childbirth. She was a great-looking woman with straight, shiny black hair, dark eyes as big as coal, an olive complexion, and a terrific figure.
Under the thinly veiled guise of a water break, Frankie started to speak to her. They talked about nothing really, perhaps the weather or how crowded it was in the park. There was instant chemistry between the two that was noticeable to those around them. Small talk led to an exchange of phone numbers and to an inevitable date.
Migdalia thoroughly enjoyed Frankie’s company. It was effortless to be with him, and he was a lot of fun. He certainly was easy on the eyes. These things were necessary to Migdalia but not sufficient.
